French Newspaper Profiles Toronto and New Investment, Siradel

Each year, the GTA attracts over 100,000 immigrants and many new investments. In an article titled, "Toronto, centre du monde," the French daily economic newspaper "Les Echos" describes this phenomenon. They outline three main draws: the strategic location, a dynamic high-tech industry, and a high quality of life. In addition, Siradel, a French company that the GTMA helped attract to the GTA, is featured in the article. In January 2009, Siradel opened a new radio expertise and research center in Toronto. Yves Lostanlen, vice-president, explains the choice of Toronto vis-à-vis Boston, Chicago, Washington DC or Dallas, "The cosmopolitan city, the quality of its universities, the time zone and the fact that Canada has always been at the forefront of the telecom sector has led us to establish ourselves here. From this basis, we can cover all of our customers in North America while being close to the U.S. mainland while rethinking its entire phone system, "he says.

The timing of this article is great for Siradel, as they are excited to be a sponsor, exhibitor, session chair and presenter of 3 scientific papers at the IEEE APS-URSI symposium, from July 11-15, 2010 in Toronto.

Little Kickers Launches in the GTA with Toddler Soccer Programs

In 2002, Christine Stanschus established "Little Kickers', a soccer training program for children aged 18 months to seven years, in the UK. Since then, it has flourished into not only the UK's leading toddler soccer program, but also into an international success, with over 100 franchisees operating in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and most recently, Canada.

In 2009, Little Kickers started to explore the option of expanding to Canada. Through Cheryl Donais of the Ontario International Marketing Centre in London, UK, the GTMA provided Little Kickers with an overview of the GTA as well as assisted with "Doing Business in Canada" issues, through our partner network. Little Kickers started offering classes in September 2009.

Little Kickers Canada has grown rapidly, now offering programs in Oakville, Etobicoke, Toronto, Beaches, Richmond Hill, Whitby, Oshawa and Barrie. When asked where he sees Little Kickers Canada in five years, Ryan Baker, Director of Coaching for LK Canada, responded, "we hope to be offering classes across Ontario through a network of franchisees that are as passionate about our business as we are. We will be expanding into the other provinces so that children from across Canada can get the positive and fun introduction to soccer that hundreds are already getting in and around the GTA in our first year in Canada."

To find out about Little Kickers classes in your area or to get more information about franchising, please contact Ryan Baker at 905-903-KIDS (5437) or email Little Kickers at info@littlekickers.ca.

Ontario Technology Corridor at Windpower 2010 to Attract New/Expanding Alternative Energy Companies

Windpower 2010, one of the world's largest wind energy trade shows and conferences event, was the forum for the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance's recent business sales trip. The show, which had more than 1300 exhibitors and 20,000 attendees, took place from May 22-26 in Dallas. Joe Kevens, manager, Business Development of the GTMA, participated in this Ontario Technology Corridor (OTC) initiative by targeting international and U.S.-based wind energy companies that have an interest in investing in the Greater Toronto Area. Through the OTC, the GTMA had 18 pre-qualified meetings at the show with potential investors. In addition, the GTMA helped secure an investment from Sinovel, China's largest manufacturer of wind turbines. They will start with a small sales office in Toronto. The GTMA would like to thank Rick Mohorovich of the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT, as he was a valuable and helpful contact at Windpower. We also thank Catharine Gerhard, Business Development Officer for CTT, as she referred the GTMA to Sinovel, who has just invested in the GTA.

GTMA Helps Secure a Wind Energy Investment in the GTA

Sinovel, the largest wind turbine manufacturer in China and the third largest in the world, based on market share, has opened a sales office in Toronto. For the Beijing-based company, this is their first foray into the Canadian market. They entered the US market in a similar fashion, by opening a sales office in Houston, Texas. Sinovel sees their new Toronto office as a "first step" into Canada. Going forward, they have said that they may consider building a manufacturing base in Ontario. Considering that Sinovel is expected to be the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer within the next five years, we may see them manufacturing in Ontario sooner rather than later.

Getting Personal with Mayor David Miller: Pages From VANTAGE Greater Toronto Magazine

It's clear from the start of the interview that for Toronto Mayor David Miller, the personal and the political are often one in the same. Before talking formally about his political drive for public transit funding, he first tells a personal story about what happened during his morning subway ride. As he took out his Blackberry to check Twitter, he was cutely interrupted by one of his youngest constituents, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl in a stroller.

"She takes (the Blackberry) out of my hand, starts looking at it and starts answering the Tweets," he says. "It was so funny. So I may know technology but she knows technology at two-and-a-half." Miller has made a point of meshing the personal and the political during his two terms as mayor. He doesn't just talk public transit; he actually rides it quite regularly. It's the same with his push for environmental policies. He gives a speech touting greener environmental policies and later that night; scores of sleepy commuters eye him across a bus or subway aisle.

Even his crusade to build the city's BMO Field soccer stadium (and replace its artificial turf with grass) has personal roots: he's a super fan and season ticket holder of Toronto FC. "I go to the first game this year and it's grass (turf)," he says. You can imagine the fans. Hey mayor! You did it! We yelled at you for three years (to get grass) and you did it!' more...

No DOOT ABOOT it – World's ICT at Home in the GTA: Pages from VANTAGE Greater Toronto

Despite a rocky year in 2009, there is no doubt that the ICT Industry in Canada is alive and well as it enters a fresh decade. The economic environment that developed in late 2008 and remained for much of 2009 resulted in a mix of opportunity and hardship for the Industry's leading firms. When all was said and done, and the data was tabulated for this year's Branham300 (a ranking of the top Canadian ICT companies based on gross revenues), the top 250 Canadian ICT companies combined to generate $71.32 billion in revenue in 2009, down six per cent compared to 2008, but up more than 40 per cent since 2003 (the first year Branham compiled its Top 250 Canadian ICT Companies listing).

When 2009 is looked back upon, it will be recognized as a transitional period for the Canadian ICT industry. For the first time in seven years, the Branham300 crowned a new number one company; Research In Motion capped off an impressive decade in which it produced double-digit revenue growth in all but one year to claim the title of Canada's leading ICT company. more…

Toronto's "Cool Factor": Pages from VANTAGE Greater Toronto

It employs more than 150,000. It's Toronto's fastest-growing industry, with revenues between C$30 and $35 billion a year. It can weather recessions because other sectors rely on it. Toronto is already host to the 3rd largest ICT sector in North America, after San Francisco and New York. And it has its sight on the number two spot.

In a recent report the city and the province of Ontario unveiled an aggressive plan for the sector: increase sales and employment by 20 per cent by the end of 2011, and become a competitor in the world's top five ICT regions. "The status quo is not an option," the report reads, "a commitment to positive change is needed to keep the region in the forefront." more…
